Palliative Care for Cancer Patients

How symptom and family support can work alongside oncology treatment.

This guide helps families understand the question and prepare for a conversation with the patient’s treating team. Care should always reflect the individual’s condition, wishes and medical plan.

Alongside cancer treatment

Palliative care can help people living with cancer discuss pain, nausea, fatigue, appetite or emotional concerns. It does not automatically replace chemotherapy, radiation or other oncology treatment. The oncology team should coordinate any changes.

Questions for the care team

Ask which symptoms need prompt attention, how medicines are reviewed and what support is available to family caregivers. Bring a current medicine list and describe how symptoms affect sleep, meals and movement.

Planning around treatment days

A person receiving oncology treatment may need help with meals, movement, fatigue and medicine organisation between appointments. Record troublesome symptoms and when they occur so the oncology team can assess them. Ask who should be contacted for fever, persistent vomiting, uncontrolled pain or a sudden change, and how the supportive-care team will share updates with the oncologist.

What to ask the care team

  • What is most important to address for this patient today?
  • Which changes should prompt a call or urgent medical assessment?
  • What can family caregivers do safely, and what needs trained support?
