Care for Patients With Spine Conditions

Why movement and rehabilitation should follow the specific diagnosis.

This guide helps families understand the question and prepare for a conversation with the patient’s treating team. Care should always reflect the individual’s condition, wishes and medical plan.

Follow medical restrictions

Spine conditions vary widely. The treating team should explain safe positioning, transfers and any movement restrictions after injury or surgery. Do not copy exercises from another patient’s plan.

Plan rehabilitation carefully

A physiotherapist may help with strength, movement or equipment after assessment. Ask which activities are safe, how caregivers can assist and what symptoms need prompt medical review.

Safety before exercises

A diagnosis and any surgical restrictions must be understood before moving a patient. Ask for a written plan for transfers, positioning and equipment. New weakness, loss of bladder or bowel control, or sudden severe pain needs urgent medical review. A physiotherapist can adapt rehabilitation when the treating doctor says movement is safe.

What to ask the care team

  • What is most important to address for this patient today?
  • Which changes should prompt a call or urgent medical assessment?
  • What can family caregivers do safely, and what needs trained support?

If your family needs professional help, learn more about our physiotherapy and rehabilitation.
