This guide helps families understand the question and prepare for a conversation with the patient’s treating team. Care should always reflect the individual’s condition, wishes and medical plan.
Protect privacy and skin
Personal care should be gentle, regular and respectful. Clean and dry skin carefully, especially where moisture collects, and use products recommended by the clinical team. Avoid rubbing fragile skin or applying treatments to a wound without advice.
Ask for a demonstration
The safest method for bathing, changing clothes and linen depends on movement restrictions, tubes, wounds and pain. Ask a nurse or therapist to demonstrate the routine and identify signs of irritation or infection that require review.
Make personal care comfortable
Prepare supplies and explain each step before starting. Keep the room warm, uncover only the area being cleaned and allow the person to do what they safely can. Ask a nurse about care around wounds, catheters or feeding tubes. Report new rashes, broken skin or pain rather than applying a product at random.
