This guide helps families understand the question and prepare for a conversation with the patient’s treating team. Care should always reflect the individual’s condition, wishes and medical plan.
Needs differ
Illness, medicines and swallowing difficulties can affect eating and drinking. Follow the treating clinician or dietitian’s plan, especially when the patient has diabetes, kidney disease, a feeding tube or fluid restrictions.
Notice changes
Record a marked drop in intake, coughing during meals, difficulty swallowing or new dehydration concerns and contact the care team. Nutrition can support general health and skin care, but a family should not change a prescribed diet or feeding method based on a general article.
Ask about swallowing safety
Coughing, a wet voice after drinking or food remaining in the mouth can need clinical assessment. Do not change food texture or feed a drowsy person without guidance. Ask what amount and type of intake should be recorded, and who to contact if eating becomes difficult or a prescribed feeding plan cannot be followed.
What to ask the care team
- What is most important to address for this patient today?
- Which changes should prompt a call or urgent medical assessment?
- What can family caregivers do safely, and what needs trained support?
