Nutrition Tips for Senior Citizens

How to notice eating difficulties and ask for an individual nutrition plan.

This guide helps families understand the question and prepare for a conversation with the patient’s treating team. Care should always reflect the individual’s condition, wishes and medical plan.

Notice barriers to eating

Dental pain, swallowing problems, low appetite, medicines and difficulty preparing meals can all affect intake. Ask a clinician or dietitian what is suitable for the person’s conditions and preferences.

Keep advice individual

Offer food and fluids according to the care plan, and report weight loss or a marked change in eating. Some people have fluid or diet restrictions, so general advice should not replace the instructions given for diabetes, kidney disease or other conditions.

Keep meals practical

Ask what foods the person enjoys and whether chewing, swallowing or preparing meals is difficult. Note a sustained drop in appetite or weight, and discuss it with a clinician. A dietitian can adapt advice for diabetes, kidney disease or other conditions; online lists of “healthy foods” may not fit a prescribed plan.

What to ask the care team

  • What is most important to address for this patient today?
  • Which changes should prompt a call or urgent medical assessment?
  • What can family caregivers do safely, and what needs trained support?
