This guide helps families understand the question and prepare for a conversation with the patient’s treating team. Care should always reflect the individual’s condition, wishes and medical plan.
Review the surroundings
Good lighting, clear walking paths, suitable footwear and appropriate mobility aids can help. Ask a clinician to review falls, dizziness, vision changes and medicines, because the cause may not be obvious.
Make movement safer
A therapist can assess balance and demonstrate transfers or exercises where appropriate. After a fall, seek medical advice, especially with head injury, pain or inability to stand. Do not lift someone in a way that may injure them or the caregiver.
Review the environment and medicines
Check lighting, clutter, footwear, bathroom access and the route from bed to toilet. Ask a clinician whether vision, blood pressure or medicines could contribute to falls. A therapist can advise on balance and mobility aids. New dizziness or a fall with injury needs medical assessment.
