Supporting a Family Member With Cancer

Ways to help without taking decisions away from the person receiving treatment.

This guide helps families understand the question and prepare for a conversation with the patient’s treating team. Care should always reflect the individual’s condition, wishes and medical plan.

Ask what help is welcome

Some people want help with appointments and medicines; others value company or quiet time. Listen first and let the person guide what support feels useful. Keep the oncology team informed about new symptoms.

Share the load

Family caregivers can divide practical tasks and ask for support when exhausted. Palliative care may help with symptoms and emotional needs during cancer treatment. It should be coordinated with, not substituted for, the treating oncology plan.

Share information carefully

With the patient’s permission, keep one up-to-date medicine list and appointment calendar. Ask the oncology team which side effects require urgent contact. Family members can share transport, meals and household tasks while leaving treatment decisions with the person and clinicians. Caregivers also need rest and a clear contact plan.

What to ask the care team

  • What is most important to address for this patient today?
  • Which changes should prompt a call or urgent medical assessment?
  • What can family caregivers do safely, and what needs trained support?
