This guide helps families understand the question and prepare for a conversation with the patient’s treating team. Care should always reflect the individual’s condition, wishes and medical plan.
More than pain relief
Comfort-focused care may address symptoms, sleep, anxiety, personal care, communication and family concerns. It starts with the patient’s priorities and a clinician’s assessment of what is causing distress.
Talk about goals
Ask which treatments may improve comfort, what burdens they may bring and how decisions can be reviewed. Comfort support can sometimes be provided alongside treatment for the illness; the treating team should explain the choices for that person.
Comfort is personal
For one person, comfort may mean less pain; for another it may mean easier breathing, privacy, familiar food or time with family. Ask the person what is most important and tell the team when the plan is not meeting that goal. A clinician can explain options, likely benefits and side effects.
What to ask the care team
- What is most important to address for this patient today?
- Which changes should prompt a call or urgent medical assessment?
- What can family caregivers do safely, and what needs trained support?
